Animal Psi Review:
Nick
Hoffman has an erratic sense of duration, as his other work with Back
Magic and Bumbrella Donkey are both double-digit collections of
spastic, fragmented bursts of discrete sounds, while these solo
releases as Katchmare contain a mere five and six tracks which last
from four and seventeen minutes apiece. ‘Ghost Frequency I’ begins with
such a monster, a sprawling, vacant space-trek of a track, a spent
Aliens drop-cloth of unwalled bowel bass tinged in star-gold treble,
the keynotes of the first half distorted into a breathing jet of
high-frequency scream at the end. Conversely, the reedy notes of
segment “II” resembles a like method of elongated figures, yet without
the implications of such massive size – the result a solo entry of
virtuous gnawing at the air. While tasteful in his conservative
approach to drone and experiment, Hoffman buries a handful of gems in
the mix, such as in the rolling timbre valleys of “III” and the faint
drum rolls ending the beige turmoil of “IV”. Final track “V” strikes
and sustains a high-frequency tuning which wavers up and down but
refuses to pause - even for breath – the subtle pan of the
Riley-inspired meditation delightfully broken and reassembled through a
wiped sleight-of-hand hidden in cymbal climbs and hammer blows. CDr
comes in a paper sleeve.
